New Threats and Pressure Against Iran

The U.S. is stepping up its threats and pressure against Iran.

The U.S. government is instigating the UN Security Council to impose more economic sanctions against Iran. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently completed a tour of the Middle East in which she repeatedly tried to justify a possible new round of sanctions by condemning the Iranian government, without any evidence, for carrying on a "secret nuclear weapons program."

This propaganda is accompanied by a big military buildup.

According to military officials, the Pentagon is deploying eight Patriot missile systems in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The Pentagon is also keeping Aegis cruisers in the Persian Gulf which are equipped with "anti-missile" systems.

Although advertised as "defensive" weapons, these missile systems are clearly offensive weapons systems. The missiles are designed as a first-strike weapon which can wipe out the strategic or short-range missiles of an adversary, thus destroying its deterrent force and leaving it defenseless. This greatly increases the threat and reality of a first-strike attack, including a nuclear attack, by the U.S.

Already, inside occupied Iraq, and in Pakistan, the U.S. has been building military bases overlooking Iran. U.S. combat aircraft have been violating Iranian airspace, and Pentagon officials admit that special forces are already engaged in covert operations inside Iran. During recent trips to the Middle East both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen "refused to rule out" military action against Iran.

On February 17, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, responding to Clinton's recent trip to the Middle East said, "Those who have turned the Persian Gulf into an arms depot in order to milk regional countries for money have now dispatched their official to go around the Persian Gulf and spread lies against Iran...But no one believes these lies because they know that America is the real war-mongering state. They have turned the Persian Gulf into an arms depot...They invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and are now accusing the Islamic Republic."

Just as in Iraq, the real motives behind U.S. threats and pressure against Iran are the exploiting, imperialist aims of the capitalist class. Iran, one of the world's largest producers of oil, has been a prime target in U.S. imperialism's so-called "war on terrorism" from the beginning. In addition, the U.S. has long sought to throttle the Iranian government for its refusal to accept U.S. dictate.
